May 2012

Dear Friends,

Thank you for your prayers for us & the work of OMF here in Cambodia. We are very aware that our first term of 4 years here is drawing to a close, and so will try to share a few summaries with you in the next couple of letters.

Street Bible study:I am thankful for the women that God has brought to this study. It has now come to a natural close but please pray on for those involved: Ming Sowpo’an (our househelp) has been the spiritual mother of the group. She now faces an uncertain future with the loss of a regular income: please ask God to provide the right job for her; pray that her husband & children would take on more responsibility in the home; & pray that she would continue to meet with & disciple Soknee. Thank you for your prayers re. Soknee (our childminder). She now has a new job, cleaning for the Cambodian Red Cross, which is wonderful. However, it means that her Christian contact is now far more limited. Please pray that she would not forget God & that she would be determined to meet with other Christians even though her life is so busy providing for her two boys. Vana (neighbour) was baptised last year & now works full-time at a Christian home for teenage girls. She has been using the Bible study material to teach those she works with. Pray that her husband & 2 teenage children would also believe & that they’d throw away their spirit altars. Allyn (Norgates’ househelp) married last year & gave birth to a baby boy just before Christmas. Sadly, her husband has left her for another woman & taken all her possessions. Please pray for God’s practical & emotional provision. Pray too for the wider Cambodian church (sadly this is a common story in the church): for good marriage preparation resources & for wise mentors.

English Teaching:Teaching at the Ministry of Cults & Religion has been a rather disheartening experience: I’ve often arrived eager to teach only to be greeted by a locked door! Lessons in May have been cancelled because of heavy Ministry workload. However, one lady, Hor Phallin, would like to continue studying at the OMF team centre: pray that someone would be available to teach her when we go on HA. Although English teaching in its current form has not been very successful in building relationships, there are still lots of opportunities & open doors, possibly in computing or translation work. Pray for God to bring people with a heart & the skills to reach Cambodian civil servants for Christ.

Isobel & Sally:We are so thankful to God for our lovely daughters & for his protection over the last 4 years. It is now very hot; please pray for Sally’s bad heat rash & for Isobel’s gruelling bus journey (esp. when air con is broken!) Pray for them both, to know Jesus’ unchanging-ness as they prepare for huge changes in their lives in the summer and as they say goodbye to friends & this foreign place that has become so familiar & is their home.

We give thanks:- for Mike & Denise’s visit – it was lovely to have them with us & a great encouragement;

  • for a very bright architecture student’s willingness to proof read the Urban Design resource;
  • for Soknee’s impact in our lives & for God’s provision of a new well paid job.

Please pray: - for all the above: street Bible study women; civil servants; Isobel & Sally;

  • for resolution in the ongoing Building Hope Project & completion of the Urban Design resource;
  • for time to study for our Phase 3 language assessment, esp. as we no longer have a childminder!

Thank you again for your prayers – Love Paul, Grace, Isobel & Sally
