When Gary came to see me recently he asked me if I would write an item for the Church Magazine, but at the time I did not feel I could do this. However, after much prayer and thought I believe God is leading me to do it.

When I had my accident [broken arm and smashed shoulder] last May I was very shaken and afraid what the future would bring and how I would cope, but of one thing I was sure – that God would be at my side.

Within a few days Social Services, physiotherapists and occupational therapists came to see what my needs would be. It is hard to remember those early days as I was unable to wash, dress or get my meals and was totally dependent on the carers who came three times a day, and they are still supporting me.

I cannot put into words how much I have valued all the help and support which Elaine and Tom [Morris] have given me and, in fact, are still giving me. I also knew the Emmaus Fellowship Group and many other friends and family members were surrounding me with prayer and love.

There were days when the pain was excruciating and the medication gave little relief. It was at one of these times that I opened my heart to God and pleaded with Him to help me through.

His answer was to tell me that He loved me, and then He gently reminded me that His only Son Jesus had suffered agonising pain on the Cross to make me whole. I just knew that he was with me sharing my pain. Peace filled my heart.

This amazing experience has enabled me to grasp the meaning of the Cross which has to come from deep within the heart and not only the mind. It will remain with me forever. Praise be to God!

My progress is going well, but this would not have been possible without all the help of carers and physiotherapists and the Day Hospital Rehab Unit where I attend every Wednesday. I have been on the receiving end of so much help from these wonderful and dedicated people for almost six  months.
