Club Ethos:
-
Our successful Sunday Club is a fun and safe learning environment for children to spend time during the Sunday service.
-
The club is held next door to the Church in our small and comfy Church Hall.
-
Our club has a range of exciting activities around a planned theme for each session. Whilst the sessions are fairly informal, they are structured around a curriculum - the club currently follows a programme called Light from Scripture Union which is aimed at 5 to 11 year olds. This has meant that the children can be split into two groups: 5 to 8 year olds who use material from the Splash books and 8+ who use material from the Xtreme books from Scripture Union [see link] .
-
We have a team of dedicated, caring and lively leaders and helpers who consistently deliver varied learning activities that are designed to cater for the various learning preferences of our children ie visual, auditory, kinaesthetic and multi-modal learning styles.
Range of Activities:
-
A typical session might include art and craft activities, games, quizzes, fun group discussions, bible memory verses etc all centred on a particular bible reading.
-
Some notable recent sessions have included:
-
erecting a gazebo indoors to represent the Tabernacle or "Holy Tent" used by the Israelites in the wilderness.
-
re-creating the tablets of stone of the 10 commandments (on beach stones).
-
singing accompanied by one of the children on guitar.
-
preparing for the “Christmas Alphabet Show,” which they performed in the church Christingle service in December.
-
Some previous sessions have involved:
-
Dressing up for (and assisting in “waiting-on”) the Church’s St David’s Day Afternoon Tea event.
-
Preparing and filling shoe-boxes with toys and gifts for Operation Christmas Child
-
Christmas party
-
Designing a logo for club T Shirts
Opening Hours:
Most Sundays 11am to 12 Noon (term-time only) except 3rd Sunday in the month when children attend All-Age Worship (Family Service) in Church
Venue: St James' Church Hall, Rhosddu, Wrexham.
Age groups:
-
3 to 11+
-
At the moment the children are informally divided for part of the session into two groups – under 8 and 8+. Each age group has activities more appropriate to their age group, with a part of the session comprising a common activity when both groups mix in a friendly and fun learning environment.
-
We have both boys and girls of all ages from a variety of ethnic backgrounds in the club.
Charges: The Sunday Club is free and no charges are made for any art/craft materials used.
Our Club Leaders:
-
There is a rota of 4 experienced volunteer leaders and a group of 4 helpers who are all CRB checked and work in accordance with Child Protection and Data Protection policies laid down by the Church.
-
We now have two leaders (one for each age group, plus a helper, for each session)
-
Our leaders and helpers come from a wide variety of professional backgrounds, including Nursery Nursing/ Teaching Assistants, medical professions and health and safety. The club leaders and helpers are supported/guided by the church committee, clergy and paid church officers.
-
We also have a male leader, which is an advantage for any children who may relate better to a male role model.
-
We also have a Welsh-speaking leader, although sessions tend to be through the medium of English. Nevertheless, St David's Day and other Welsh Saints Days often form the basis of some club activities eg St Dwynwen's day.
Health and Safety:
-
Several of our leaders are first aid trained.
-
The club has regular fire drills and has a Fire Risk Assessment.
-
The club's activities and Church Hall building are fully insured and risk assessed by the Parish Children’s Co-ordinator.
-
The club caters for any children with special dietary needs or other health issues. Such records are held entirely in accordance with Data Protection best practice and are kept locked away.
