Who was St James?
Who was Saint James?:
  • Our church is dedicated to the Apostle James.

  • He is widely commemorated in the popular hymn “Lord of the Dance”, which mentions “.. . the fishermen, James and John.”

  • The disciple James was indeed a fisherman, with his brother John.

  • Their father was Zebedee and Jesus named these two brothers “Boanerges” which means “Sons of Thunder”.

  • James was a partner to fellow fisherman/disciple Simon Peter.

  • James was one of only three disciples allowed by Jesus to follow him into the home of Jairus where Jesus raised Jairus’ 12 year-old daughter from death.

  • Again, James was one of three present on the mountain when Jesus was transfigured before them.

  • Jesus also confided with James and 2 others in the garden at Gethsemane when he became sorrowful and troubled.

  • James and John also unsuccessfully asked Jesus for them to sit either side of him.

  • James was killed by Herod when persecuting the early church.
