St. Margaret’s walking group meets at St. Margaret’s church at 9.30am.on the first Saturday of the month.
We undertake walks of varying difficulty (not over strenuous), of usually between 5 and 6 miles. We try mainly, although not exclusively, on these walks to enjoy the countryside of the surrounding area. The Sandstone Trail and walks such as Offa’s Dyke trail proved popular for their wildlife interest as well as for the exercise. Many of our walks give a fascinating appreciation of local geography and history and an insight into our industrial heritage. In previous years, starting in 1998, we visited the Lake District and stayed in Grasmere usually on a Friday and Saturday night in late August or early September. This enabled us to tackle a longer more challenging walk on the middle Saturday, with a shorter walk on the first day, often on the way up to the Lakes and another walk on the third day before leaving for home. While not attempting the higher peaks, we have still reached some notable summits such as Wansfell Pike, Latrigg, Castle Crag and Orrest Head - with the fine panorama that first inspired Alfred Wainwright. Often a boat trip was incorporated to get us to the start of our walk, or back to our starting point afterwards. Dinner was followed by a quiz and usually Brian on the piano. We were excited to see badgers on the lawn just outside the windows in the evening and deer in the early morning. We are an ecumenical, friendly and sociable group and would welcome anyone who wished to walk with us.
