The St Giles’ Centre for Religious Education and Faith Development
The Centre The Centre is a joint undertaking between St Mary’s Centre at St Deiniol’s library and the Wrexham Parochial Educational Foundation in partnership with St Giles Church. Its aim is to provide a centre that will enable the Christian Faith to be taught more effectively to children and young people in the Wrexham area and beyond. The Centre will have three distinct yet interrelated areas of work: 1.In partnership with the Local Education Authority, the Diocese of St Asaph and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Wrexham, it will promote and support the development of high quality Religious Education in Church and State schools in the Wrexham area and beyond. 2.In collaboration with the Diocese of St Asaph and local Ecumenical partners, it will help the church to be more effective in its work with young people, providing teaching and developing resource support for Sunday school teachers, youth and children’s workers. It will be a centre for the teaching ‘Godly Play’ 3.It will develop resources to enable the historic church of St Giles to be used to teach young people about the Gospel of Jesus Christ A Shared Mission Both the St Mary’s Trust and the Wrexham Parochial Education Foundation were set up to ensure that the church could remain fully involved in the religious development of young people in Wrexham and North Wales. At a time when the secular agenda is becoming more powerful, the Trusts are attempting to support the church in reaching out in particular to non church schools and young people with no church connections. As the historic Parish Church of Wrexham, St Giles is called to witness to Christ in all areas of the town’s life and supporting the spread of the gospel among young people is a key part of this. The Church will share in, and support the mission of the Trusts by providing a home for the work and witness of the Centre at the heart of a living, praying, worshipping Christian community. In this process it can make its own contribution to the Centre’s life and can build its own, ongoing relationship with schools and young people. Although the Centre is beginning its work with the appointment of Gavin Craigen as its first director, facilities in St Giles will not be completed until the end of the year.
